The Idiot’s Guide To Metaldetectorshub Explained

Unregulated and inappropriate use of metal detectors causes serious damage to Ireland’s archaeological heritage. The categories of objects that are most commonly located by metal detectorists in Ireland, such as coins, tokens, buttons, clothes fasteners, thimbles, keys, seals, weights, strap ends and belt mounts, all fulfil the definition of ‘archaeological objects’ which may only be searched for under license. The unauthorised use of metal detectors to look for archaeological objects is against the law.

The only real con to using a multi-frequency machine on the beach is that you won’t get the type of depth you would with a PI – although it will still be excellent. If hunting in the wet sand, surf or water, you’ll need a machine that’s either PI or multi-frequency. Note that you do NOT need a specialty machine if you’re hunting on the dry sand of a salt water beach. One thing you want to make sure of here is that you do not buy a machine with too high frequency – i.e., one designed for gold prospecting (you can read our guide here on the best metal detectors for gold nuggets). You’d like to get into metal detecting but aren’t sure which detector to go with.

While the early days of metal detecting are likened to the old west, with open ranges and few laws, the hobby today is controlled by a hodgepodge of federal, state, city and county rules. An annual hunt hosted by members of Midstate Metal Detector Club out of Plover draws detectorists from all over the U.S., said club president Steve Miller, who’s been in the hobby since 1971. There are at least five clubs scattered throughout the state that were founded in the glory days of metal detecting and are still going strong. More than 100 years later, John Ruth was living in northern Wisconsin when the urge first hit to pick up his dad’s old metal detector —  the one gathering dust in a far corner. Metal detecting is experiencing a revival and enthusiasts are hot on the trail of hidden treasures.

In fact, if you get fed up with coin hunting you can use this machine for everything else with a few tweaks. The Spectra V3i is coveted by all metal detectorists – it’s the Ferrari of the detecting world. The only useful missing feature that really matters on this machine is manual ground balancing, but that’s not a show stopper – you can use its automatic one instead.

And, by the way, my 7 year old son Juanito found a nickel yesterday when he took his detector out for the first time! I have been impressed by the professional approach and the experience of Daniel, Michael and the entire team at Detector Electronics Corp. I am looking for Gold flakes/small nuggets in a very mineralized iron ore area and quartz veins also to search in shallow streams. I was curious if a low end Garrett would be good for detecting underground pipes and water lines.

The only factors you need to consider here is that you get a fully submersible machine with good discrimination – that’s really it. All you need is to be hit by one wave while digging your hole, and the machine is toast if it’s not waterproof. So if you plan to hunt beaches where there’s lots of trash, go with a multi-frequency. While either PI or multi-frequency will work, there are some pros and cons to each. But you’re depth will be severely limited to the point where it’s not even worth it to detect.

Depending on how old the child is, you might want to start with a detector that’s not super heavy. Most of these machines will be PI and should be used in areas where gold is known to be found.

A Metal Detector that i can use to find everything on water and land. A smaller coil would see less of the ground, process less ground signals and allow you to increase your sensitivity to the point where you could be getting the same depth as you would with the larger coil in neutral ground.
